Academic compliance refers to policies, procedures, and practices in place to ensure that actions regarding degree and certificate programs – from the content of the offerings, to how and where they are delivered – adhere to institutional, state, accreditation, and federal requirements and standards.

What experiences allow students to develop their abilities?

The institution’s College Curriculum builds on the legacy of the Jefferson model by laying a foundation for the development of an engaged democratic citizenry. The foundation of general education requirements includes up to 17 credit hours plus disciplinary coursework related to quantitative reasoning skills. 

Empirical and Scientific Engagement (2 credits):
Analyzes observable evidence and uses formal and quantitative reasoning. 
Quantification, Computation, and Data Analysis Literacy (6 credits):
Enables students to apply mathematical skills to understand and solve real world problems.
Discipline: The Chemical, Mathematical & Physical Universe (3 credits): 
Develops knowledge of past and present attempts to identify the material composition and mathematical structure of the physical world and universe and the forces that govern their interaction.
Discipline: Living Systems (3 credits): 
Develops a knowledge of principles of how living systems work and interact with the environment. Develops an understanding of living systems to make educated personal and societal assessments and decisions.
Discipline: Science & Society (3 credits): 
Provides students with a basic understanding of the relationship of scientific knowledge, technology, and society.

As many as 61% of students complete a degree within the College of Arts and Sciences with this foundation. 

Students who pursue a degree in one of the eight professional schools at UVA have varying requirements for quantitative reasoning that support the skills required for the discipline. 

  • School of Architecture – Requires a Math/Natural Science Elective (3 credits) and disciplinary coursework. 
  • McIntire School of Commerce – Requires Math, Statistics, and Economics courses (13 credits) and disciplinary coursework.
  • School of Continuing and Professional Studies – Requires Math and/or Natural Science courses (8 credits) and disciplinary coursework.
  • School of Data Science – Requires Quantification, Computation, and Data Analysis Literacy (6 credits), Chemical, Mathematical & Physical Universe (3 credits), Living Systems (3 credits), Science & Society (3 credits) and disciplinary coursework.
  • School of Education and Human Development – Requires Data Literacy/Statistics (3 credits) and disciplinary coursework.
  • School of Engineering and Applied Sciences – Requires Calculus courses (8 credits), Science courses (8 credits), Science, Technology, & Society courses (9 credits), Programming course (3 credits), Math/Science elective (3 credits) and disciplinary coursework.
  • Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy – Requires the same general education curricular program as defined by the UVA College of Arts and Sciences. 
  • School of Nursing – Requires Natural Sciences/Math courses (14 credits) and disciplinary coursework.
