Academic compliance refers to policies, procedures, and practices in place to ensure that actions regarding degree and certificate programs – from the content of the offerings, to how and where they are delivered – adhere to institutional, state, accreditation, and federal requirements and standards.

Organizational Changes and All Other Actions

Several organizational changes and activities require compliance with institutional, state, regional accreditation, and federal policies, including creating, modifying or closing:

  • Academic departments
  • Dual academic awards with external institutions
  • Centers and institutes
  • Branch campus of UVA
  • Collaborative or Combination programs between UVA schools
  • Joint programs with external institutions
  • Articulation agreements with other institutions that stipulate transfer of academic credits
  • Academic programs or courses offered through contractual agreements or consortia

The internal and external approvals required for these and other common actions are set forth in the Review and Approvals.

Programs are encouraged to confer with their school’s academic compliance contact and with the Office of Academic Compliance contact listed below as early as possible for guidance and support on the necessary documentation and approvals required.

The following form to initiate review of a planned organizational change or other action includes detailed instructions.
